Tom Dixon - Objects Of Desire

Tom Dixon is one of my favorite industrial designers. I discovered him a while back during my research for my final metalsmithing class project. I was instantly drawn to his minimal style and intrigued by his impressive biography.

Tom Dixon is a British designer specializing mainly in furniture. He was born in 1959 in Sfax, Tunisia and moved to the United Kingdom at the age of four. Without formal training, he began designing furniture in his early 20s when after being injured in a motorcycle accident he used his welding skills learned while repairing his motorcycle to create a variety of objects.

Items of his work form part of the collections of the Boston Museum of Fine Art, the Design Museum in London, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Moma in New York, the Tokyo Museum of Modern Art, the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Vitra Museum, Basle, Switzerland.

  1. Tom is one of my favourite designers too. I have been lucky to meet him a few times now. What makes him stand out is his sensibility to materials. He has understood sustainability should produce top design that is asthetically beautiful and tactile.
